MADISON, WI, USAThe quasi-volksmusic ensemble, voXXclub, has been named one of the 6 finalists in a bid to represent Germany in the 2018 Eurovision Song Contest(ESC).

Designed as a way to help mend the fissures of World War II, since 1956, the annual contest has pitted what are, purportedly, the best musical acts from each country in Europe against each other, with an overall winner emerging.

The ESC is broadcast on television in each of the participating countries and reportedly had a viewership of 240 million in 2017. This year 43 countries will compete - most every European country plus Australia and Israel.

Germany chooses its representative via an elaborate process in which musical acts are judged by a panel of 100 specially selected music fans and a 10 member jury of musical experts.

The national selection process this year is called "Unser Lied fur Lissabon" and the 6 German finalists were winnowed from an initial field of 4,000 hopefuls - of which voXXclub is one of the only 6 still standing. It is the only one from the schlager realm. Final selection will be made in February after a televised competition.

voXXclub, a 5 man group (it was a sextet before their blond heartthrob, Julian David departed several years back) has developed a style that can best be described as "funky volksmusic" - traditional volksmusic elements, punctuated by a kind of edgy rock beat.

When CSMRfirst profiled them in 2014, they were riding high on their energetic "Rock Mi" single, which ultimately went platinum in Germany.

Should they make it to the trans-Europe musical extravaganza in Lisbon this coming May, voXXclub will most assuredly be the only one of the 43 national acts wearing lederhosen.

They will introduce a newly written, as yet undisclosed song for the ESC event.
